youtube modest branding embedded videosWhile YouTube is critical for businesses as part of a video marketing strategy, ideally you don’t want most of the video content on your site using YouTube embeds. Why? Your goal on YouTube is to educate and pique the interest of the viewer but ultimately you want to get them to your website where you can control the experience. On your website, you have full control of the experience and don’t want the viewer clicking off to watch the video on YouTube because there are way too many distractions there like cute babies giggling and such.

But what if you want to feature some content that you don’t own on your blog? Maybe there was a really inspiring Ted Talk or some other industry related video content that by sharing on your website you can add your own flair to show your expertise. I get it, I’ve done it here. The goal is to minimize the flashy whirligigs that YouTube includes by default on embeds. Namely get rid of that darned YouTube logo on the player. Here’s how you do it. We’ll use our Banana PSA as an example video:

  1. Find that video you want and grab the embed code – Click on the “Share” button under the video and when that menu pops up, click on “Embed”
  2. Copy the code – self explanatory
  3. Tweak the code – here’s where you need to put your coding hat on for a bit. Don’t worry, it’s easy. Most YouTube embeds without any customization look like this:

The “<iframe width x height” bit denotes the start of the code and the size of the video measured in pixels as it will embed on your website. The “</iframe>” denotes the end of the line of code you’d embed.

The first line of code after the width x height bit, is the URL of the YouTube video and here’s where we want parse this out a bit to pimp our video player.

The “src=” is telling the website to find the link that follows. “” is the actual link to the video. What you want to do is add a little bit more to it to tell the player to leave a few YouTube golden diversion nuggets out immediately after that YouTube link but before the end quotes (“).

Immediately after the YouTube video link, add the “?” character. This let’s the code know you’re adding some changes or limiters to how that link will display. Then insert the text “modestbranding=1” this parameter removes the gaudy YouTube logo from the player bar.

Next, add a semicolon “;” to tell it you’re adding another modifier and include “rel=0” this removes any suggested videos from popping up after the video finishes. After all you don’t want your competitor’s videos popping up after the video plays on your own website, do you?

Finally, add another semicolon “;” to denote another modifier is being added and next put in “showinfo=0” This parameter removes that annoying header bar above the video. That’s it.

So what started looking like this:

While this includes a watermarked version of the YouTube logo that appears, it only appears when the video is rolled over by your cursor and overall this leaves a much cleaner player to use on your website leaving less distractions for the viewer. This may all seem like something pretty minor, but most online viewers attention spans are shorter than a goldfish. Your website video marketing strategy, at a minimum, should be to guide the interested viewer through your sales process.

Obviously for content you own, when it’s on your website you should be using a business video hosting provider like Wistia to deliver like rich analytics, customizable call-to-actions and integrations with sales / marketing automation software. But for any content you want to share as inspirational or that provides great value to your audience, you shouldn’t be dangling unnecessary distractions for that viewer to hop off your site and go to YouTube. While YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world and you need a presence there; it’s also the #1 source of cute puppy videos and cats playing the piano. So keep your viewers focused on why they came to your site in the first place!
