After John Lewis, perhaps the brand most associated with great storytelling ads over the past few years has been Sainsbury’s. TheTo those unfamiliar with Sainsbury’s, is one of the largest chains of supermarkets in the United Kingdom. One of their best will be featured soon, but this year’s ad by Sainsbury’s is pretty amazing in scope and execution. That’s why it’s featured on day 7 of my 12 (work)days of Christmas.
The premise is simple but it’s so elegantly produced. A hard-working and devoted dad comes up with a plan to make sure he can be with his family on Christmas. What parent can’t relate? The fact that they chose to do it in stop frame animation is a testament to how the medium is still current and it’s use is growing. If the voice sounded familiar, it was sung by well known British actor James Corden (of the Late, Late Show and Carpool Karaoke fame). Animation is the perfect medium to stretch the boundaries of reality and this video does a great job of adding that element of imagination to the story.
